About Us
Laos is a land-locked country in South East Asia with about 7.1 million people. The main language is Lao with about half of the population speaking it. The rest is split between many minority languages. Buddhism is practiced by over 60% of people in Laos. There are only about 1.5% Christians in the country with three national churches, the Lao Evangelical Church, the Catholic Church, and the Seventh-day Adventist.
Bible work in Laos started in 1902 by The Bible Society of Indochina (a branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society). Afterward, The Bible Society in Laos was established in 1966 but was disrupted in 1975. Currently, there is no formal Bible society in the country. As of 2017, we have a registered a bookstore, called Life Bookstore. Through the bookstore, we want to be able to grow our Bible distribution in the capital and throughout the country.
Established in 1946, the United Bible Societies (UBS) is the collective name for our fellowship of 147 individual Bible Societies working in over 200 countries and territories. Bible Societies share a common mission in the efficient use of God-given resources of placing the Word of God in the hearts and minds of the people they serve.
There are more than 100 years of history of organized Bible work in Laos. This can be traced back to 1902. During that time, the Bible work in Laos was part of The Bible Society of Indochina (a branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society).
Subsequently, The Bible Society in Laos was established in 1966 but disrupted in 1975. At present, while there is no formal Bible Society in the country. Nonetheless, Scripture translation and production continues through partnerships between the United Bible Societies and local churches. Our team in Vientiane continues with the same vision as our predecessors and colleagues around the world – to make the Word of God accessible to all peoples.
